Your first ten paying supporters won't be strangers. They'll be people who already like what you make and were waiting for a way to show it. The job this week isn't to go viral. It's to tell those people, clearly, that the way now exists.
Why ten is the number that matters
Ten supporters at R49 a month is R490 a month before fees. That isn't a salary. It's proof. Ten people paying means the offer works, your posting has a rhythm, and the eleventh person who lands on your page sees that others already back you. Zero to ten is the hardest stretch of the whole thing. After that, it's mostly showing up.
Want to see what a bigger number looks like? The membership income calculator below does the sums from your follower count, a realistic conversion rate and your price, after fees.
Set up two tiers, not five
Creators starting a membership tend to overbuild: four tiers, each with a clever name and a list of perks they'll struggle to deliver. Start with two.
- A free tier. People follow along and get told when you post something for members. It's a much smaller ask than "pay me", and every free follower is someone who can upgrade later.
- One paid tier. One price, one clear promise. "The full workout every week." "The bonus episode every Friday." "The recipe card with quantities." Pick something you can deliver for six months without burning out.
You can add a higher tier later, when supporters start asking for more. They'll tell you what it should be.
Note: post your first paid piece before you announce. Nobody wants to pay for an empty room.
Who to ask first
- The people who already DM you. Anyone who has asked "where did you get that?", "when's the next one?" or "can you help me with…". They've told you they want more.
- Your regular commenters. Scroll your last ten posts. The same names keep coming up. Those are your first fans.
- Friends and family. Not to guilt them into paying, but because they share. Ask them to repost your launch Story, not to subscribe.
What to say (copy these)
Say what it is, what they get, and that it's fine not to. That last part is what stops it feeling like begging.
Instagram or TikTok Story, with a link sticker:
"I've opened a members page. Every week there's the full [workout / recipe / episode / tutorial] that doesn't fit on here, from R49 a month. If you've been enjoying my stuff, this is the best way to support it. No pressure, the free posts aren't going anywhere."
WhatsApp Status:
"Big one for me: I've got my own page now where you can support what I make, in rands. [your link] 🙏"
A DM to someone who asked for help before:
"Hey! You asked me about [thing] a while back. I've just put the full version on my page, thought you'd want it: [your link]"
One DM to a real person beats ten Stories. Send five this week, to people who've already asked you for something.
Your launch week
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Post your first paid piece. Don't announce yet. |
| 2 | Announce on Stories and WhatsApp Status, with the link. Use one of the lines above. |
| 3 | A normal free post that ends with "the full version is on my page". |
| 4 | Send five DMs to people who've asked you for something. |
| 5 | Behind the scenes: show yourself making the paid piece. It proves the work is real. |
| 6 | Thank your first supporters publicly, first names only and with their permission. Nothing sells a page like other people already on it. |
| 7 | Check your page's stats. Where did visitors come from? Do more of that next week. |
Make one-off support easy too
Not everyone wants a monthly subscription. Some people just want to say thanks once. If your page has a tip button, mention it after a post that clearly helped: "If this saved you money, you can send me a tip, link in bio." For a lot of new pages, tips are the first money in.
What puts people off
Announcing every day for a month. Guilt ("if you really supported me…"). A page with nothing on it yet. Five tiers nobody can tell apart. Announce properly once, then mention it naturally at the end of your posts.
After the first ten
Keep the rhythm you promised. Reply to every supporter. Once a month, make something only for them that makes them glad they're there. Growth after ten comes from your free content doing its job and your page being worth landing on.
What to do this week
- Set up a free tier and one paid tier, with a promise you can keep for six months.
- Post the first paid piece before you tell anyone.
- Announce once, on Stories and WhatsApp Status, using the lines above.
- Send five DMs to people who've asked you for something.
- Thank your first supporters in public, with permission.
If you haven't yet, start with part one: where to put your link so people actually tap it.
