How we calculate this
Membership income is members times price, minus fees. The price is yours to set. The fees are published. The one number nobody can give you is how many followers will pay, so that one's a dial, not a fact.
1. How many join
There is no published South African figure for the share of social followers who become paying members, and Humanz's 2026 creator economy report, the biggest local survey, covers brand income only. The closest published anchor is Substack's: "We tend to see 5-10% of free subscribers convert to paying subscriptions, with 10% being a rate to aim for." That's email subscribers, who have already opted in, so a social follower converts lower. Our presets are editorial: 0.5% cautious, 1% a starting point, 2% strong, and 5% for an audience that behaves like a newsletter list. We'll replace them with Sociaal's own marketplace medians once there's enough volume.
2. Fees
We use Sociaal's published fees because Sociaal is our publisher and publishes them in full: a 10% platform fee on memberships, tips and product sales (terms, clause 7.1), plus the card fee charged by its payment processor, Paystack. Paystack's South African card rate is 2.9% + R1.00 excluding VAT, which is 3.335% + R1.15 with 15% VAT. EFT payments cost 2% instead. Other platforms publish their own fees; check them before you choose.
3. The goal line
The default goal of R5,000 a month comes from Humanz's Paid to Create 2026 report: 55% of paid South African creators earn under R5,000 a month from content across all sources. The calculator shows how many members at your price would clear it, and what share of your followers that is.
4. What's left out
Churn, annual discounts, free trials, failed card payments and tax. Members leave, so the yearly figure assumes you replace the ones who do. The number is before income tax; SARS treats membership income like any other creator income.
