Podcasting in South Africa went from a niche to a habit faster than most people noticed. Edison Research's last Infinite Dial survey here found monthly podcast listening in the major metros had gone from 10% of people in 2019 to 26% by the end of 2021. That's one in four, before the post-pandemic boom in video podcasts.

The gear question comes up in every "should I start one" conversation, and it's the wrong first question. Hosting is free. A phone records a usable solo episode. The money only matters when you want two people in a room to sound like they're in the same room, and even then it's less than a mid-range phone.

Here's what it costs at five levels, priced at South African retailers on 11 October 2026. Links go through sca.al, our publisher's short-link service, so we can see which gear readers look at. No retailer pays us.

Kit 0: phone, free hosting, R0

Spotify for Creators hosts your show for free and publishes it to Spotify. To be on Apple Podcasts and the rest, you submit the RSS feed it gives you to each platform once. That's an evening's admin, not a cost.

Record a solo episode on the phone's voice memo app, in the softest room in the house, with the phone a hand's width from your mouth. It'll sound like a phone, but a phone close to your mouth beats a R3,000 microphone across the room. If you can't get to five episodes on this, the problem isn't the gear.

Kit 1: one person, one USB mic, about R2,000

Item Our pick Price
USB condenser mic with pop filter and shock mount Fifine Q6T kit at Takealot R999
Closed-back headphones Samson SR850 at Takealot R855
Desk mic stand Basic mic stand at Takealot R169
R2,023

A USB mic plugs straight into a laptop, no interface, no cables to buy. The Fifine kit includes the two accessories you'd otherwise buy separately. The headphones matter more than people think: you can't hear a problem you're not listening for, and open earbuds leak into the mic.

The catch with a condenser mic like the Q6T is that it hears everything, including the fridge, the street and the dog. If your room is lively, skip to Kit 2.

Kit 2: one person, a mic that grows with you, about R3,500

Item Our pick Price
USB and XLR dynamic mic Samson Q2U recording pack at Takealot R1,649
Headphones Samson SR850 at Takealot R855
Pop filter Tecnix pop filter at Takealot R115
Boom arm PCBuilder Cast Steady boom arm at Takealot R864
R3,483

The Q2U is the mic to buy if there's any chance you'll do this for more than six months. It's a dynamic mic, so it ignores most of the room. It has both a USB plug for today and an XLR socket for the day you buy an interface, so nothing gets thrown away. And the pack includes a desk stand, so the boom arm is optional until the desk gets cluttered.

If you'd rather have the mic everyone recognises from video podcasts, the Rode NT-USB Mini is R2,865 at Outdoorphoto. It sounds a little richer than the Q2U and looks the part on camera, but it's USB only.

Kit 3: two people in a room, about R8,800

This is where most podcasts go wrong. Two USB mics into one laptop is a fight you'll lose; you need an interface with two XLR inputs, and two mics with XLR outputs.

Item Our pick Price
Two XLR mics 2 × Samson Q2U at Takealot R3,298
Two-input interface Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, 4th gen at Takealot R4,399
Two pairs of headphones Samson SR850 twin pack at Takealot R1,094
R8,791

Add two XLR cables and a headphone splitter, which the 2i2 needs because it has one headphone socket. Both are under R200 at any music shop. The Q2U desk stands in the pack mean you're recording the day the box arrives.

Kit 4: the proper studio, about R12,200

Item Our pick Price
Two broadcast mics 2 × Rode PodMic at Takealot R4,996
Interface Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, 4th gen at Takealot R4,399
Headphones Samson SR850 twin pack at Takealot R1,094
Two boom arms 2 × PCBuilder Cast Steady at Takealot R1,728
R12,217

The PodMic is the mic you see on most of the podcasts you watch, and at R2,498 it's cheaper than its reputation suggests. It needs a boom arm because it has no stand, and it needs a pop filter; Rode's own is R715, a generic one does the job for R115.

Kit 5: the Rodecaster route, about R19,000

Item Our pick Price
Podcast console Rode Rodecaster Duo at Outdoorphoto R10,995
Two mics 2 × Rode PodMic at Takealot R4,996
Headphones Samson SR850 twin pack at Takealot R1,094
Two boom arms 2 × PCBuilder Cast Steady at Takealot R1,728
R18,813

The Rodecaster replaces the interface and the laptop. It records to an SD card, has a headphone socket per person, plays jingles from pads, and makes a two-person show sound finished without editing. If you're recording weekly with a co-host, it pays for itself in hours saved. If you're solo, it's a lot of buttons.

Video podcasts

If the show is going on YouTube or TikTok, the audio side is the same and the video side is our phone or camera guide. The one addition is a wireless mic that records on the transmitter as a backup: the Rode Wireless GO III at R4,995 does two people, clips to a shirt, and feeds the phone or camera directly. The Shure MV7+ at R6,998 is the on-camera podcast mic that does USB and XLR at once, for the day you want one mic that works in both worlds.

The room is the real upgrade

Every kit above sounds worse in a tiled kitchen than a R999 mic sounds in a bedroom with curtains and a wardrobe. Before you buy acoustic foam, hang a duvet behind you and put a rug under the desk. If you do buy foam, a 12-pack of panels is R348 at Takealot, and it does less than the duvet. The order to fix sound in is: mic close to mouth, soft room, better mic.

Headphone upgrades

The SR850s are the cheapest headphones we'd put on a guest. When they wear out, the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x at R1,244 and the Sony MDR-7506 at R2,699 are what studios have been using for decades.

What to do this week

  • Record a voice memo of a five-minute episode. Listen on headphones. Decide if you want to do this before you buy anything.
  • Set up free hosting on Spotify for Creators and submit the feed to Apple.
  • Buy the Q2U if it's just you, or two of them and a Scarlett 2i2 if it's two of you.
  • Hang a duvet behind the mic before you spend a cent on foam.
  • Put the podcast link on a free links page with your other platforms, so a listener can find the rest of you.
