No. And the people telling you otherwise are usually selling cameras.
A phone is enough for most of what gets posted in South Africa every day: TikToks, Reels, Shorts, talking to camera, lifestyle content, restaurant and travel clips, UGC for brands. A camera becomes useful for a specific set of jobs, and it's worth knowing what they are before you spend R13,000 to find out you didn't have one of them.

What a phone does well
Samsung's spec sheet for the Galaxy A36 5G, which Geekhub listed at about R5,999 in its June 2026 round-up of phones under R10,000, says it records 4K video at 30 frames per second. That's the same resolution a R26,000 mirrorless camera records, on a phone that costs less than a quarter of it.
Resolution isn't the point, though. Every platform compresses what you upload until a 4K file and a 1080p file are hard to tell apart on a 6-inch screen. What a phone gives you that a camera doesn't is this: it's always with you, it edits and posts from the same device, it focuses on your face without being told to, and nobody looks twice when you film with it in a coffee shop.
The phone is enough for:
- Short-form video on TikTok, Reels and Shorts, where the viewer watches on a phone anyway.
- Talking to camera at a desk or in a car.
- UGC for brands, who want content that looks like a customer made it, because that's the point of UGC.
- Lifestyle, food, travel and events, where being quick and unobtrusive matters more than image quality.
- Anything you're doing to find out whether you'll keep doing it.
If you're in that list, spend your money on a microphone, a tripod and a light, in that order. Our kit guide prices all three from R600.
Where a camera earns its keep
A camera has a sensor many times bigger than a phone's, a lens you can change, a proper microphone socket and a screen that flips round to face you. Those four things buy you:
- Low light. Evening events, restaurants, anything indoors without a window. Phones smear and sharpen their way through it. A camera just sees.
- Background blur. The soft, out-of-focus background that reads as "professional". Phones fake it in software and the edges give it away.
- Lens choice. A wide lens for a small room, a long lens for a product shot, a fast lens for the blur above.
- Long-form YouTube. A 15-minute video gets watched on a TV. Compression is gentler, the image is bigger, and the phone's limits show.
- Product photography. If you're photographing things for brands or your own shop, a camera and one good light outclass any phone.
- Client work. Some brands and agencies expect a camera on a paid shoot. Not because it's needed, but because it signals you're serious. That's a business decision, not a creative one.
If two or more of those describe your week, you're a camera person. If none do, you're not yet.
The surprise: a camera costs less than a flagship phone
| Price | |
|---|---|
| iPhone 17, 256 GB, at iStore | from R21,799 |
| Samsung Galaxy S26, 256 GB, at samsung.com/za | R20,999 |
| Canon EOS R50 Creator Kit, camera, lens, mic and grip, at Outdoorphoto | R12,795 |
| Sony ZV-E10 with 16-50 mm lens, at Outdoorphoto | R15,995 |
A creator who's about to upgrade a phone to the top model could instead keep the mid-range phone and buy a camera, and have money left for a mic. That's not the right move for everyone, but it's worth putting the two numbers side by side before the phone contract rolls over.
If you buy one, buy one of these
Canon EOS R50 Creator Kit, R12,795. The best-value starting point at the moment because it's on markdown from R16,995 and comes with Canon's small shotgun mic and a tripod grip. Outdoorphoto's own YouTube camera guide lists it among its budget picks. Orms has the same kit at R12,895.
Sony ZV-E10 with 16-50 mm, R15,995. The original creator camera, still sold new. Bigger lens range than Canon's, excellent face tracking, and a lot of used lenses on the market. The newer ZV-E10 II at R25,995 adds better video and a bigger battery; buy it if the R10,000 difference doesn't hurt.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Creator Combo, R10,995. Not a camera in the traditional sense: a tiny gimbal camera with a wireless mic in the box. It's for vloggers who walk and talk, and it's useless for photos. Worth knowing it exists before you buy a camera and a gimbal separately.
Skip the Nikon Z30. It's a good camera, and both stores list it, but neither had it in stock when we checked and both are pushing its replacement.
The phone-first upgrade path
Before a camera, there's a middle step that most beginners skip: make the phone better.
| Upgrade | Fixes | Price |
|---|---|---|
| DJI Mic Mini 2 wireless mic | Sound, which viewers notice first | R1,495 |
| DJI Osmo Mobile 7 gimbal | Shaky walking footage | R1,495 |
| Godox LDP18BI LED panel | Dark rooms, mixed colours | R1,650 |
| Joby GorillaPod Mobile Rig | Mounting a mic and light on the phone | R1,840 |
All four together are R6,480, half the price of the Canon kit, and they fix the things that actually make phone video look amateur. A camera with none of them will still sound bad and shake.
What to do this week
- List the content you made last month. If it's all short-form and talking-head, the phone wins. Stop reading.
- Count the low-light shoots you turned down or hated. That's your camera case.
- Fix sound and shake first. R3,000 on a mic and gimbal shows up in every video. R13,000 on a camera shows up in some.
- If you buy a camera, buy the kit with the lens and mic included. Bodies on their own are a trap for beginners.
- Put your handles on one free page so the people who find you on one platform can find the rest.
