How we calculate this

No calculator knows your audience better than you do. This one is a starting point for a negotiation, built from published South African data, with our assumptions shown.

1. Base rate from your follower count

We start with the going rate for one Instagram feed post from Juicy Designs' published South African tier table: nano (under 10k) R500–R2,500, micro (10k–50k) R2,500–R10,000, mid-tier (50k–250k) R10,000–R40,000, and celebrity from R100,000. Instead of jumping between tiers, we draw a smooth curve through those boundaries, so 10,001 followers isn't worth more than 9,999.

Be aware that SA agencies disagree. GKnect Digital puts micro creators at R1,500–R6,000 and ReachDigital at R2,500–R8,000, so our numbers sit at the upper end of what's published. None of these agencies say where their figures come from.

2. Format

SA agencies agree that video costs more than a static post, but none publish by how much. These multipliers are our editorial estimates:

  • Instagram feed post or carousel: × 1
  • Instagram reel: × 1.5
  • Instagram stories (set of 3 frames): × 0.6
  • TikTok video: × 1.5
  • YouTube short: × 1.2
  • YouTube integration (60–90s in a video): × 2
  • YouTube dedicated video: × 4

3. Engagement

If you add your engagement rate, we compare it with Lit's South African benchmark: 3% for nano creators and 4% for micro creators. Lit doesn't publish a figure for bigger accounts, so we use 4% above micro too. Better-than-average engagement raises your rate, with diminishing returns, up to × 1.4. Weaker engagement lowers it, down to × 0.75.

4. Usage rights and exclusivity

If a brand wants to run your content as a paid ad, or stop you working with competitors, that is worth extra. ReachDigital, a Cape Town agency, tells brands to budget another 30–50% for paid usage. Our multipliers are editorial estimates: paid usage from × 1.25 (30 days) to × 2 (a year), and exclusivity × 1.15 (30 days) or × 1.3 (90 days).

5. The range

We show 70% to 140% of the estimate, because published SA rates vary at least that much for the same follower count.
