Every year brings a long list of "trends" from overseas, and most of them never reach Mzansi in any useful form. Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 roundup by Jacinda Santora runs to 16 of them. We've picked the five that actually change how South African creators get paid and how local brands should plan their campaigns.

The big picture: flat fees and pure reach are losing ground to precision, proof and relationships.

> The rise of regional creators, bilingual messaging, and the resurgence of nano-influencers also signal a return to precision over scale.

## 1. Smaller creators are now standard

Influencer Marketing Hub no longer even calls micro-influencers a trend. After eight years on its list, it treats working with nano creators (1K–10K followers) and micro creators (10K–100K) as the norm for any balanced strategy.

| What marketers reported | Share |
| --- | ---: |
| Increased use of micro and nano-influencers | 43% |
| Shifted budget from macro/mega to micro/nano | 24.9% |
| Brands primarily engaging nano influencers | 53.8% |

**Locally:** in a multilingual country with very different scenes from Soweto to Stellenbosch, a creator who owns one community, language or neighbourhood is a serious asset. Small creators should stop apologising for their size and start selling their specificity.

## 2. AI is part of the toolkit

According to the roundup, 54.8% of marketers view AI favourably or highly favourably for making influencer marketing more efficient, and 61.4% have integrated AI into their marketing activities, with 44.4% using it for content production. But there's caution too: 36.7% worry about a lack of authenticity with AI-powered influencers, and 19% about consumers mistrusting AI-generated content.

**Locally:** use AI for the admin (briefs, captions, research, edits) and keep your face, voice and opinions human. That's the part brands can't automate.

## 3. Long-term deals beat one-off posts

Brands are moving towards ongoing partnerships, and the reasoning is simple: one sponsored post rarely moves sales, because buying decisions take time. The roundup suggests creators package several posts over a period, much like a brand would buy an ad flight.

**Locally:** pitch three- or six-month bundles in rand, with a clear content calendar. It gives brands better results and gives you more predictable income.

## 4. Pay is tied to performance

As creators slot into affiliate programmes, performance-based deals are expected to grow, with clients expecting specific numbers of sales or clicks. Santora's advice to creators is to read contracts carefully before guaranteeing a return, and to consider negotiating ongoing royalties rather than a single payment.

**Locally:** if a brand wants results-based pay, ask for a base fee plus commission, trackable links or codes, and access to the sales data you'll be judged on.

## 5. Specialists win

Creators keep carving out niches and building real expertise, which makes them more sought after by brands in those industries. Alongside that, authenticity remains the watchword: promoting products your audience doesn't care about damages both the campaign and your credibility.

## What to do with this

- **Creators:** define your niche and community in one sentence, offer multi-month packages, use AI behind the scenes, and never sign a performance deal without seeing how results will be tracked.
- **Brands:** build rosters of smaller, well-matched creators instead of one big name, budget for longer partnerships, agree clear tracking upfront if you want to pay on results, and be open with audiences about any AI-generated content.
